ODM Bottle Moulds: The 2 Structural Pitfalls We See Most

From our tooling shop — where about 42% of original designs trip on the same two issues.

Designing your own bottle is the most exciting part of building a brand — and the part where first-timers most often get stuck. From our own tooling shop, roughly 42% of original bottle designs run into the same two structural problems before they're production-ready. Knowing them up front saves a mould revision, and weeks of schedule.

Most first-time designs trip on the same two structural issues — both fixable early.

Pitfall 1: wall draft and uneven thickness

A drawing can look perfect and still be hard to manufacture. Walls that are too straight (no draft angle) or unevenly thick cause two real problems: parts that stick or distort when released from the mould, and weak points that leak or dent in the field. The fix is undramatic — add a small draft angle and even out wall thickness — but it has to happen at the design stage, not after steel is cut. We flag this on the 3D render before anyone commits to tooling.

Rule of thumb from our shop: if a wall has no draft and varies in thickness, expect demoulding and durability trouble. Catching it on the render costs nothing; catching it after the mould is cut costs a re-machine.

Pitfall 2: neck, thread and mouth geometry

The opening is where leaks, slow filling and lid problems are born. A thread pitch that's slightly off, or a mouth that's too narrow, leads to seals that don't bite and bottles that are slow to fill on a line. Geometry here also affects your logo: a wider, more even opening gives a larger, more forgiving print area.

The data backs up going wider where the design allows: in our mould records, a wide-mouth opening improved filling efficiency by about 42% over a narrow neck, and reduced colour-position complaints on large print runs. It's not always the right call aesthetically — but it's the trade-off worth understanding before you lock the neck.
