'Thermos' is technically a brand name — like Hoover or Band-Aid — that became a generic term. In sourcing, when you say 'thermos flask', you almost always mean a double-wall vacuum insulated stainless steel flask. And when you say 'insulated bottle', you mean the same thing.

The confusion matters for importers because it affects the keywords you use, the products you describe in listings, and the compliance documentation you need. Let's clear it up.

Single vs Double Wall Construction

Single-wall bottles are exactly what they sound like — one layer of stainless steel. They're lighter and cheaper to manufacture, but they offer no insulation. Your cold drink sweats, your hot drink becomes cold in 20 minutes.

Double-wall bottles have an air gap between two layers of steel. Without vacuum, this provides modest insulation — maybe 2–3 hours for hot drinks. With vacuum — where the air between the walls is removed — insulation jumps to 12–24 hours.

Vacuum Insulation Explained

The vacuum is created during manufacturing by welding the inner and outer walls together, then removing air from the space between them through a small hole, which is then permanently sealed. This absence of air eliminates convection heat transfer — the main way heat moves.

The specification to verify: ask your supplier for their ASTM F2127 test results — this is the standard test for thermal performance. A legitimate vacuum flask should maintain ≥65°C after 6 hours (hot) and ≤10°C after 6 hours (cold).
