What Hallmark's Function Reliability Test Actually Tests

Hallmark doesn't just want product specs — they run their own lab tests. Their Function Reliability Test covers five areas:

1. Age & Humidity test: 30 days at 38°C/95% RH. Checks lid sealing degradation, print adhesion, and metal corrosion.
2. Dishwasher test: 10 cycles at 65°C. Checks coating integrity, lid function, and labeling.
3. Thermal function test: Hot fill to 95°C, measure after 6 and 12 hours. Cold fill to 4°C, measure after 24 hours.
4. -cycle function test: Open and close lid 25 times, fill and pour 25 times. Checks for fatigue failure.
5. UPC scannability test: All 12 barcodes must scan on first attempt at 30cm distance.

Result codes: ACCEPT, CAUTION, UNACCEPTABLE. We passed all tests with ACCEPT in 2017. The full test report is downloadable from our certifications page.

What actually held us up wasn't the product — it was which standard to test to. Hallmark's spec references several test standards, and the one our factory normally ran differed slightly from theirs. After some back-and-forth we agreed to test to Hallmark's stricter standard — tougher requirements are how a factory gets better — and from there it passed cleanly and the partnership began.

Hello Kitty's Approval Process — What It Requires From Suppliers

Hello Kitty licensed products go through a different process — character accuracy is the primary focus. They're not testing thermal performance, they're verifying that the artwork matches their brand guide pixel-perfectly.

How that account actually grew: Hello Kitty came to us cautiously back in 2018 — their bar is high — but after that first order they were satisfied enough to expand us across more cup styles over the years. This year their volume has already passed last year's full-year total.

Hello Kitty approval involves: submitting production samples through their licensee's approval portal, demonstrating Pantone color accuracy against Hello Kitty's proprietary swatches, confirming character proportion and expression match Hello Kitty's model sheets, and providing factory audit documentation.

For importers and distributors: the Hello Kitty approval is the licensee's responsibility, not yours. But your factory needs to be capable of executing the artwork accurately. That's what we demonstrated when we supplied Hello Kitty character drinkware for Asian retail distribution.

What Factory Approvals Mean For Your Business

When a factory has passed Hallmark or Hello Kitty's approval process, it signals three things that actually matter to you as a buyer:

First, they have documentation habits. A factory that assembled proper documentation for Hallmark's audit can assemble proper documentation for your customs team, your retail buyer's vendor audit, or your Amazon listing compliance check.

Second, they can handle quality-sensitive clients. If their product survived Hallmark's 25-cycle function test and Hello Kitty's color accuracy review, it'll survive your customers.

Third, they have experience with retail packaging requirements. Hallmark-compliant packaging — barcodes, hang tags, Prop 65 labels, planogram dimensions — is a specific skillset. Most factories in Yongkang don't have it.
