Why Standard Supplier Evaluation Fails

The standard factory evaluation questions — Are you a manufacturer? How many years of experience? What's your production capacity? — are useless for comparing Chinese drinkware factories. Every factory answers yes, 10+ years, 1,000,000 pieces/month.
The questions that actually differentiate quality factories are the ones that require specific, verifiable answers — answers that a real factory can give in 10 minutes and that a trading company or low-quality factory can't fake convincingly.
Questions About Certifications (Questions 1–3)

'Can you send me your FDA test report right now?' Good answer: they send a PDF within 30 minutes. Report number, lab name, test date, and product description should all be legible. Bad answer: 'We'll send it after you sign an NDA.'
'What's the reference number on your LFGB report?' Good answer: they give a specific number without needing to look it up. Bad answer: confusion, delay, 'let me check with my manager.'
'Which lab issued your certifications?' Good answer: STQ, SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas, TUV — recognized accredited labs with verifiable reference numbers. Bad answer: an unknown lab name, or 'our internal testing.'
These three questions alone eliminate 60% of suppliers who claim to have certifications but don't.
Questions About Production and Quality (Questions 4–7)

'Can I see a video of your painting workshop right now?' Good answer: live video within 24 hours. Bad answer: 'Our workshop is being renovated.'
'What is your defect rate for vacuum thermos flasks?' Good answer: less than 1% with specific explanation. Bad answer: 'We have very good quality' or '0.01% defect rate' (not credible).
'Do you do your own printing or outsource it?' Good answer: in-house, specific equipment mentioned. Bad answer: 'We work with trusted printing partners.'
'What happens if a batch has higher-than-expected defects?' Good answer: specific replacement policy. Bad answer: 'It never happens.'
Questions About Commercial Terms (Questions 8–12)

'Who is my specific contact person for this order, and how do I reach them if you're not available?' Good answer: a named person with direct WhatsApp. Bad answer: a general customer service email.
'Can I visit your factory before placing an order?' Good answer: yes, specific address, offer to arrange airport pickup. Bad answer: evasion or excessive conditions.
'How many days' advance notice do you need for third-party inspection?' Good answer: 3–5 business days to coordinate. Bad answer: 'We prefer not to have third-party inspection.'
'What documentation is included in a standard export package?' Good answer: CO, BL, commercial invoice, packing list, health certificate — with a named person responsible. Bad answer: vague confirmation without specifics.
