A logo that looks perfect at delivery and washed-out six months later is the most common complaint on branded mugs. It is almost always the detergent, not the heat — and it is predictable before you order.
The short version: there is no single "best custom mug" — there is a best mug per brief. For premium gifts, a vacuum travel mug (hot ~12 h). For daily office coffee, a double-wall steel mug (warm 4-6 h, lower cost). For health-positioned brands, a ceramic-lined flask with no metal taste. For full-colour artwork, a UV-printed or sublimated photo mug. For bars and events, a steel beer mug. All five run from a 500-piece MOQ with your logo. The trap to avoid: paying vacuum prices for non-vacuum construction — ask which one you are being quoted.
Household dishwashers run around 55 °C with mild detergent. Commercial machines in cafés, canteens and hotels run at 80 °C with strongly alkaline detergent, three to five cycles a day. That combination attacks the ink binder, not the ceramic or steel underneath. A mug that survives 500 household washes can look tired after one season in a café.

The question to ask before you order: where will these mugs actually be washed? If the answer is a café, a canteen or a hotel, specify laser engraving or kiln-fired ceramic ink and accept the constraint that comes with it — one tone for laser, simpler artwork for fired ink. If they are going to end users' kitchens, almost anything works and you can use the full colour range.
The part buyers skip: ask your supplier which of the two silk-screen types they are quoting. “Silk screen” on a quotation can mean either, and the price difference is small next to the difference in life.

Not every brief needs 12-hour retention. Double-wall (non-vacuum) mugs like the TL-1018 (300ml) keep drinks warm or cold for roughly 4-6 hours, cost noticeably less, and still have the solid two-wall feel that stops condensation rings on desks. For espresso programmes, the TL-1010 ships as a 220ml four-cup set — a favourite for café chains and hospitality gifts. This is the honest workhorse tier: know that it is not vacuum, price it accordingly, and it over-delivers.
An inner ceramic coating on 304 steel means no metal taste with coffee, tea or citrus, easy cleaning, and its own FDA/LFGB plus antibacterial test reports on the coating itself. When the artwork is a photo, a gradient or a full-wrap design, spot-colour silk screen will not get you there. UV printing and sublimation both reproduce photographic detail edge to edge, so custom photo mugs run on the same production lines as logo mugs — same 500-piece MOQ, just a different decoration station. A stainless beer mug survives what glass does not. The TP-1005 barrel mug with handle runs 220ml to 1000ml in double-wall 304 — a solid serving mug for taprooms and merch tables. Who keeps it? A trade-show giveaway and a key-client gift are different budgets — match the tier, not the trend. What is the artwork? 1-3 spot colours point to silk screen; photos point to UV or sublimation; metal-and-minimal points to laser. What proof do you need? Not on the same mug, honestly. Full colour means UV digital or heat transfer, and both sit on the surface. If the mugs go to end users' kitchens that is fine. If they go to a café or canteen, pick durability over colour range — or split the order: fired ink for the HoReCa portion, full colour for retail.
Ask directly: kiln-fired ceramic ink, or air-dried? Both get called “silk screen” on a quotation. Fired ink goes through an 800 °C kiln and bonds into the glaze; air-dried ink cures at low temperature and stays on the surface. The price gap is small; the life gap is not.
