Why the supplier matters more than the quote

Cross-border orders fail in ways a domestic order rarely does — and almost always for the same reason.

1

The risk does not disappear. It moves somewhere you cannot see.

Wall steel gets thinner. The white base under the print on a dark body gets skipped. Cartons hold fewer pieces. The third-party test report never gets ordered. None of this shows up in a quotation. All of it shows up in the container.

2

An order that stalls halfway across the world is very hard to chase.

The goods are made, the deposit is spent, the shipping window is closing — and your only leverage is a supplier who wants to keep working with you. If they do not, there is no practical recourse: legal action across borders costs more than the order.

3

Distance breaks after-sales too.

A leaking lid found by your customer three months later needs someone at the factory who will look up your batch, find the cause and stand behind it. That only happens if the supplier expects a second order. One competing purely on price does not.

What price-first sourcing looks like laterWhat it costs
Material substituted quietly — thinner steel, lower-grade resin, a different siliconeDents in transit, complaints from end users, sometimes a compliance failure at customs
Process shortened — screen run past its life, white base skipped, inspection reducedThe first cartons look right and the rest do not; the problem surfaces after you have paid
Order stalls mid-productionDeposit spent, season missed, and no practical way to enforce anything from another country
No after-salesThe defect becomes your problem with your customer, not the supplier's problem with you

What actually protects you is not a clause in a contract you would never enforce across borders. It is choosing a supplier with relevant experience in your product and your market, a quality mindset you can hear in whether they tell you what can go wrong before you ask, and a service mindset that only becomes visible when something does.

That is the position we have chosen: hold quality and service first, then get the price as low as that allows — and put nearly thirty years of production experience into each order so buyers do not repeat mistakes we have already seen. It is why this site publishes what each decoration method cannot do alongside what it can, and why we would rather answer a harder question than a cheaper one. How we think about supplier selection →

The Questions We Hear Every Week

Real questions, direct answers — not polished PR language.

500 pieces per design in stock colours — a real starting quantity, not a token one. A matched Pantone body colour is 1,000; custom scale markings, a custom lid or a modified shape start around 3,000 plus tooling; a fully exclusive mould is 10,000 plus the mould cost. Tooling is quoted per part, not per bottle, so a complete set runs US$10,000–20,000+ — and the mould is yours, stored and maintained free, with the fee refunded once volume passes an agreed level. Full tooling costs and ownership →

Digital mockup and quote in 24 hours. Printed sample in 7–10 days on an existing body; 45–60 days if tooling is involved. Production about 30 days — and that clock starts at sample approval plus deposit, not at your first email. Then sea freight: roughly 30–35 days to North Europe, 25–30 to the US west coast, 35–45 to Brazil. Work backwards from your in-hands date, and check whether Chinese New Year falls in between — factories close for about two weeks and the surrounding weeks are congested.

The approved physical sample is the reference, not the artwork file — we keep it on record with your Pantone number and check every subsequent batch against it. We inspect 8% of every batch, and you are welcome to appoint your own inspector (SGS, Intertek, TUV, BV) — we schedule that before the balance payment so the result actually protects you. One thing worth agreeing in writing before production: the AQL level and what counts as a defect. “Minor colour variation” means different things to different inspectors, and settling it upfront prevents an argument about goods that are already made.

This is the number most often understated, so here it is properly: a steel or plastic mould starts around US$2,000–3,000 per part. A bottle is not one part. The outer shell, the inner liner and the lid each need their own tooling, and a lid with a flip or lock mechanism is several parts on its own. In practice a complete set of tooling for one bottle runs US$10,000–20,000+, and a complex design goes above US$20,000. Anyone quoting “$3,000 for a custom bottle” is quoting one component. This is exactly why most buyers start on one of our existing bodies — you get a distinctive product through colour, decoration and lid choice, with samples in 7–10 days instead of 45–60, and the development budget goes into marketing instead of steel. Planning your own brand? Seven decisions, in the order that saves money, and what a custom mould really costs.

If you pay for the tooling, the mould is yours — confirmed in writing before production, and we do not offer it to any other buyer. We store and maintain it free of charge, including the cleaning and rust prevention a steel mould needs between runs; you never handle or ship it. And once cumulative volume passes an agreed level, we refund the tooling fee — so a mould that looked like a large upfront cost becomes a deposit you get back. Ask us to write the refund threshold into the quotation, not just mention it in an email.

Because drinkware is volumetric cargo — a container fills on space long before it reaches a weight limit, and the shipping line charges for the space either way. A part-container (LCL) shipment also carries fixed origin and destination charges that do not shrink with your quantity, so the fewer pieces you ship, the more each one costs to move — on very small orders, sometimes more than the product itself. A 20ft container holds roughly 26 m³, and getting close to filling one is usually the single biggest saving available on a first order, often larger than any unit-price negotiation. If you are not ready for a full container, tell us your budget and we will work backwards — combining two models or adjusting carton dimensions can land you at a much better cost per piece. Ask for carton size and pieces per carton with every quote: on drinkware, freight per piece varies more between suppliers than unit price does.

30% deposit, 70% before shipment by T/T is standard, and the deposit plus sample approval is what starts the 30-day production clock. L/C at sight is possible on larger orders but adds bank time at both ends. For a first order, T/T with third-party inspection before the balance is what most of our buyers use — a real checkpoint without the cost and delay of an L/C.

Seven things, and the order matters because the decisions most expensive to change come first: positioning and target buyertarget market (it sets compliance) → sales channelbudget split honestlyexisting body or your own mouldpackagingdecoration method. You do not need all seven answered before contacting us — send the target customer, a rough budget and a reference product, and we will tell you which ones actually matter for your case.
