Finish & decoration
The finish you pick decides how your logo can be applied
Tumblers are the category where surface finish and decoration method have to be chosen together, and where they most often are not. A powder-coated matte body and a full-wrap photographic design are both perfectly good choices; they are just a harder pair than most buyers expect, and finding that out after artwork approval is expensive.
Matte and soft-touch finishes. These are what make a tumbler feel premium in the hand, and they are what retail buyers keep asking for. They are also the least forgiving surface for heat transfer film — the pairing has to be matched deliberately rather than assumed. We have worked through this on our own lines and know which combinations behave; the practical consequence for you is simply this: tell us the finish and the artwork at the same time, at quoting stage. If you send a matte reference and a wrap design separately, two weeks apart, we will end up asking you to choose anyway — just later.
Gloss and powder-coat. The most straightforward surfaces to decorate. Silk screen sits cleanly on them for one to three flat colours, UV digital handles full-colour artwork, and both hold up in daily use.
Bare and brushed stainless. The natural home of laser engraving. The mark is cut into the metal, so it cannot chip, peel or wash off — no coating to fail. The trade-off is that laser gives you one tone in the colour of the steel underneath, not your brand colour. If you need a coloured logo on a stainless tumbler, we spray the body first and print onto the coating, which is two operations and shows in the price.
Bamboo shell and bamboo base. Engraves beautifully and photographs well for retail listings. Natural grain means no two pieces are identical — worth writing into your product copy rather than fielding it as a complaint later.

Who buys custom tumblers, and what each one actually needs
Retail brands and e-commerce sellers. Vacuum construction, a finish that photographs well, retail packaging and a barcode that scans. Consistency between repeat orders matters more than anything else here, because a colour that drifts between batches shows up immediately in customer reviews. We keep your Pantone reference on file and match against the approved sample, not against the artwork file.
Corporate and employee gifting. A laser-engraved company mark on a stainless body is the safest specification we know: permanent, no colour to drift, and it looks the same after two years on a desk as it did in the box. Budget usually goes further in the packaging than in extra thermal performance nobody measures.
Cafés and hospitality. Volume, washability and a drink that tastes of the drink. Stainless in contact with the liquid, laser rather than print, and if the metallic note is a concern for coffee, our ceramic-lined interior is worth asking about — a food-grade ceramic coating over the steel, not a ceramic vessel.
Promotional distributors. Unit cost at volume and an in-hands date that will not move. We work with ASI and PPAI member distributors and are used to event deadlines; give us the date at enquiry rather than after approval and we will tell you straight whether it is achievable.
One thing worth knowing about this category in particular. This is where the factory started, and not at the end you would expect. Before we made a single finished cup under our own name, we made the vacuum liners that other factories built their tumblers and travel mugs around — the inner vessel, the hardest part to get right and the part most suppliers today still buy in. Those companies put their own names on the outside; the insulation inside was ours.
Two things follow from that, and they are the reasons this category is different for us. The first is that we understand insulation at component level rather than as a spec line on a datasheet — when a vacuum draw is marginal or a weld is going to fail after a hundred dishwasher cycles, we know it at the liner stage, not after your container has landed. The second is tooling: decades of building tumblers left us with moulds for classic shapes that have quietly gone out of production everywhere else. If you are trying to revive a discontinued silhouette or match a shape from a range that was retired years ago, send us a photo before you pay for new tooling — there is a genuine chance the mould is still on our floor.
If you want third-party evidence rather than our word for it: our drinkware went through Hallmark’s Function Reliability Test at their DG Lab in 2017 — Age & Humidity, dishwasher, thermal function, a 25-cycle function test and UPC scannability. Every one came back ACCEPT, and we have been an approved Hallmark supplier since, with product across 2,000+ US retail stores. Those are exactly the failure modes that matter on a tumbler: does the finish survive the dishwasher, does the lid still seal after 25 cycles, does the barcode scan at the till.
Which test produced that number? The international reference is ISO 20342:2020 — contents above 60 °C after 6 hours filled hot, below 13 °C after 12 hours filled cold, plus a vacuum-integrity check. It is a test method, not a certification, so ask for the report rather than a logo. We can arrange third-party ISO 20342 testing on your model when a programme needs it.
Whichever of these you are, the same production reality applies: 500 pieces per design to start, a printed sample in 7–10 days, roughly 30 days of bulk production after approval, and inspection at an 8 % sampling rate against an industry norm nearer 5 %. How do I stop the colour drifting between repeat orders?▾
Approve a physical sample and let that sample — not the artwork file — be the reference. Screens and monitors vary; a sprayed body in your hand does not. We keep your approved sample and Pantone reference on file and match subsequent runs against it. This is the single most common cause of complaints on repeat tumbler programmes, and it is almost entirely avoidable.
