From 12oz commuter cups to 40oz mega tumblers — how to choose the right sizes for your range.
Capacity is one of the first decisions a buyer makes, and offering the right sizes — not every size — is what keeps your line tight and your inventory efficient. Here is a plain guide to the common tumbler and bottle capacities and where each one sells, with both ounce and metric equivalents.

Most successful lines run three to four sizes, not seven. A typical winning spread is one commuter size (16–20oz), one large daily size (30oz), and one trend size (40oz). Add a small (12oz) only if you serve coffee or kids. Fewer SKUs at higher volume each means better pricing and simpler inventory.
If you only stock one insulated tumbler for the US market right now, the data points at 40 oz with a handle. It is the size that turned a category into a phenomenon, and there are practical reasons behind it rather than pure fashion.
It solves a real problem. A 20 oz cup needs refilling three or four times through a working day. A 40 oz holds a genuine day’s hydration in one fill, which matters if you are on a site, in a car, at a desk far from a kitchen, or tracking water intake. The handle exists because 40 oz of liquid plus a steel body is heavy enough that people were dropping them.
It photographs as value. On a retail shelf or a marketplace listing, the large format simply reads as more product for the money, whatever the actual cost difference is. That perception is worth more in conversion than most listing copy.
But check the cup holder before you commit. This is where large-format programmes go wrong. Many 40 oz tumblers do not fit standard car cup holders, and a meaningful share of buyers will return one that does not — the whole point of a commuter cup is that it travels. Tapered bases exist for exactly this reason. When we quote a large format we will tell you the base diameter, because it decides whether your product survives contact with a car.
Most importers do better with three sizes than with five. A workable spread looks like this.
12–16 oz — the coffee size. One hot drink, fits every cup holder, lightest to ship. This is your promotional and corporate-gifting workhorse, and the size where a printed logo has the best cost-to-visibility ratio.
20–24 oz — the all-rounder. Enough water for half a day, still cup-holder friendly, still comfortable one-handed. If you are stocking a single size for a general retail audience rather than the hydration-tracking crowd, this is usually it.
30–40 oz — the statement size. Full-day capacity, handle recommended above 30 oz, and the size that drives social visibility. Check cup-holder fit, and expect higher freight per unit — a 40 oz tumbler occupies roughly the carton space of two 20 oz cups, which shows up in your landed cost long before it shows up in your retail price.
One practical note on ordering across a range: our 500-piece MOQ applies per design and per colour, and different capacities are usually different designs because they run on different tooling. Three sizes in two colours is six lines, not one. Tell us the full range at quoting stage and we will tell you honestly where the volume breaks land — it often makes more sense to launch two sizes properly than five thinly.
If a tumbler needs to fit a car cup holder, keep the base diameter around 62–70mm — this matters more than total volume for daily use. Larger 40oz tumblers usually add a handle and a straw because they are too big for one-hand sipping.

We make all of these capacities from 500 pieces per design, with your branding, lids and packaging. Tell us your market and we will recommend the size mix that fits it.
