Why this one spec decides insulation, weight, price — and how to read a wholesale quote correctly.
When two water bottle quotes look identical but the prices are far apart, the answer is almost always construction. Double-wall and single-wall bottles can look the same from the outside and feel completely different in performance. Here is how to tell them apart and order the right one.

A single-wall bottle is one layer of stainless steel. Light, strong, rust-free — but it transfers temperature, so a cold drink sweats on the outside and warms up fast. A double-wall vacuum bottle is two walls of steel with the air drawn out between them, creating a vacuum gap that heat cannot cross. That vacuum is what gives you 12–24 hours cold and 6–12 hours hot.
Most comparisons stop at two options, which is where the confusion starts. On a factory floor there are three constructions, and the middle one is the one buyers keep mistaking for the third.
Single-wall. One layer of steel or plastic. No insulation at all — a hot drink makes the outside hot to hold, a cold drink sweats onto the table. That is not a defect, it is the construction. Single-wall is the right answer when the vessel is a print canvas: promotional giveaways, event mugs, anything where cost per unit and print area beat thermal performance. It is also the lightest and cheapest to ship.
Double-wall without vacuum. Two layers with ordinary air trapped between them, often a PP outer shell over a 304 stainless inner. Air is a poor conductor, so this genuinely works: the outside stays comfortable and a hot drink holds for roughly four to six hours. It is also considerably cheaper and lighter than vacuum, which is why it dominates office and café programmes. What it will not do is match a vacuum flask, and it should never be sold as one.
Double-wall vacuum. The air between the walls is drawn out. With almost no medium left to conduct heat, performance jumps to all-day. Longest hold, heaviest, most expensive.
The trap: "double-wall" alone tells you nothing about whether there is a vacuum. Two quotes can both say double-wall, differ by 40% in price, and both be honest. Ask which of the three you are being quoted, and get it written on the invoice.
You do not need a lab. Fill the bottle with boiling water, close it, wait fifteen minutes, then touch the outside.
Hot to hold — single-wall. Warm but comfortable — double-wall without vacuum. Cool or barely warm — vacuum. The same test works with ice water: a vacuum body stays completely dry on the outside, a non-vacuum double-wall sweats slightly, a single-wall drips.
Weight is the second tell. A vacuum flask is noticeably heavier than a non-vacuum double-wall of the same capacity, because there is more steel and a sealed cavity. If a supplier quotes "vacuum insulated" at a price that undercuts everyone by a third, weigh the sample.
A marginal vacuum is the failure mode that costs importers the most, because it passes a same-day test and fails months later — long after the container has landed and been distributed. The draw was weak, or a weld had a microleak, and the cavity slowly lost its vacuum.
So we check vacuum integrity on 100 % of bodies as semi-finished parts, before assembly, before painting, before any logo goes on. A rejected liner at that stage costs almost nothing. The same liner inside a finished, branded, shipped bottle costs you the batch and your customer's trust.

Single-wall is lighter and cheaper because it uses less steel and skips the vacuum process. Double-wall costs more and weighs more, but commands a far higher retail price. If a vacuum-bottle quote comes in surprisingly low, ask directly whether it is true vacuum or single-wall — this is the most common quiet substitution we see buyers get caught by.
