Six to twelve hours is the honest answer — and four things decide where you land in that range.
A double-wall vacuum food thermos holds a hot meal for roughly six to twelve hours. Not twenty-four, and not "all day" regardless of how it is used. The spread between six and twelve is not marketing vagueness — it is four variables that the buyer, not the factory, controls. If you are sourcing a hot food thermos for a retail programme, these are also the four things your end users will complain about if the packaging over-promises.
Insulation hours are measured from boiling, in a full container, sealed, at room temperature, undisturbed. That is the lab condition. Real use breaks all four of those assumptions at once, which is why a food thermos that keeps food hot for twelve hours in a test can arrive lukewarm at 1pm.
The physics is the same as a drinks flask: two walls of 304 stainless with the air drawn out between them. With almost no air left there is almost nothing to conduct heat away, so the only significant loss paths are the lid and whatever thermal mass you failed to fill.
1. Fill level. This is the big one. A half-filled jar has a half-jar of air inside it, and that air cools fast and then pulls heat out of the food. Filling to within a couple of centimetres of the rim buys more hours than any other single habit.
2. Preheating. A cold steel liner absorbs heat from the food before it starts holding it. Rinsing with boiling water for a minute and tipping it out costs nothing and is worth roughly an hour at the far end. Every food thermos instruction sheet says this; almost no end user does it.
3. Capacity. Larger jars hold heat longer because the ratio of contents to surface area is better. An 800 ml jar outlasts a 400 ml jar with the same build. This is why a children's food thermos at 400 ml should never carry the same hour claim as the adult size — same vacuum, less mass.
4. How often the lid comes off. Each opening dumps the warm air and replaces it with cold. A jar opened three times at a desk performs nothing like a sealed one.
These get conflated constantly, and the difference matters commercially. A vacuum food jar is a cooking vessel: pour in boiling water and raw rice, seal it, and residual heat finishes the meal by lunchtime. A lunch box only keeps already-cooked food warm — it cannot cook, and listing it as though it can is how a programme earns returns.
If a buyer asks for a "thermos lunch box", settle which one they mean before quoting. The carton plan, the price and the claim on the packaging are all different.
