Tooling is quoted per part, not per bottle — and a bottle is several parts. Here are the real numbers, who owns the mould, and when tooling is worth it at all.
Because tooling is priced per part, and a bottle is not one part. This is the most common budgeting mistake we see, and it is not a small one — buyers plan around a figure that is a fifth of the real cost.

So the real figures: a steel or plastic mould starts around US$2,000–3,000 per part. A complete set of tooling for one bottle runs US$10,000–20,000+, and a complex design goes above US$20,000. If a supplier quotes “$3,000 for a custom bottle”, ask which part that covers — the answer tells you whether they are being careless or hoping you do not ask.
A steel mould is a precision block built to run 300,000–500,000 cycles before it needs refurbishing. The cost sits in the steel grade, the machining hours, the number of cavities and how much the geometry fights you — undercuts, thin walls and tight radii all add machining time.



Cavity count is worth understanding before you approve a quote. A single-cavity mould is cheapest to build and slowest to run; a four-cavity mould costs more upfront and produces four pieces per cycle. On a programme with real volume the multi-cavity tool often pays for itself within the first order through cycle time alone — ask us to quote both so you can see the crossover.

That last point changes the arithmetic more than buyers expect. A US$15,000 tooling bill that comes back after a few reorders is a cash-flow question, not a sunk cost — and it is worth asking every supplier whether they do the same.

Changing a lid, adding a custom scale marking or altering one dimension needs far less tooling than a new body — typically from around 3,000 pieces plus a smaller tooling charge. You get something a competitor cannot simply reorder, without the US$10,000+ commitment.
