Safety, sizing and lid design for children's bottles — and what wholesale buyers must verify.
Children's bottles are held to a higher bar than adult ones, and rightly so. Parents, schools and retailers all scrutinise safety, and the certifications matter more here than in any other category. Here is what we tell buyers sourcing kids' and school water bottles.

For children's drinkware, certifications are not optional. BPA-free is the baseline; you want FDA and LFGB food-contact compliance, and California Prop 65 for the US market, which tests for lead and cadmium. For stainless, food-grade 18/8 with no coating touching the drink is the cleanest answer. Always see the test report for the exact material and any paint or print used on drinking surfaces.
Leak-proof is everything — these bottles live in backpacks. Flip-straw and push-button spouts are easy for small hands; a lock prevents accidental opening. A carry loop or handle, and a sip mechanism that is easy to clean, round out a good kids' lid.
Children’s drinkware is the category where a supplier’s shortcuts surface fastest, because the product gets dropped, chewed, thrown in a bag and washed daily by someone who is not reading care labels. Four things come up again and again.
1. Treating it as a scaled-down adult bottle. A child cannot generate the grip strength or the wrist torque an adult can. A lid that an adult finds “secure” is often a lid a six-year-old simply cannot open, which means the bottle stays full all day and the parent stops buying the brand. Straw and push-button flip lids exist for this reason: one hand, low force, no twisting.
2. Underestimating what a school bag does. A bottle that survives a lab drop test can still leak in a rucksack, because the failure mode is not impact — it is sustained pressure on a lid from a stack of books, at an angle, for six hours. When we test lids for school programmes we lay them down loaded rather than only dropping them.
3. Getting the weight wrong. A 500 ml stainless bottle full of water is heavy for a primary-school child carrying it alongside books. For younger age groups Tritan or PP often serves the child better than steel does, even though steel reads as the premium option to the adult buying it. Match the material to who carries it, not to who pays for it.
4. Assuming the certificate covers everything. Children’s products attract the most scrutiny of anything we make, and the questions get specific: is the print inside the mouth zone, are small parts detachable, what happens to the coating if it is chewed. We hold FDA, LFGB, EU 1935/2004 and Prop 65 reports from accredited lab STQ, downloadable before you order rather than promised after. For school tenders and retail chains, ask us early what a given market requires — some ask for tests we would need to commission, and that is a four-week conversation you want to have at quoting stage.
Bright multi-colour artwork is the whole point of this category, which rules some methods in and out. Silk screen runs one to three flat colours — fine for a school crest or a simple character, not for a full illustration. Full-colour artwork means UV digital or heat transfer, and heat transfer is what you want if the design wraps the body. Laser engraving is permanent and dishwasher-proof but gives you one tone in the colour of the steel, which is rarely what a children’s range wants.
The durability question worth raising with your end customer: any print on a bottle that goes through a school dishwasher every evening will fade faster than the same print on an adult’s desk bottle. Hand washing genuinely doubles the life of the artwork. Better to put that line on the packaging than to field the complaint in a review.
Kids' sizes typically run 350–500ml so they are not too heavy when full. Bright colours, soft-touch finishes and printable surfaces for characters or school branding all sell — full-colour UV and heat transfer are ideal for playful artwork.
