Why Import Duties Matter More Than Factory Price

When comparing factory quotes, most buyers focus entirely on the FOB price. But the total landed cost — what you actually pay to get the product to your warehouse — includes freight, insurance, import duties, customs broker fees, and local delivery.

For US importers, Section 301 tariffs on Chinese goods have added 7.5%–25% to the cost of many categories since 2018. Knowing the correct tariff rate before you sign a purchase order is essential for accurate margin calculations.

For stainless steel vacuum insulated bottles imported from China:

HTS 7323.93.00.00 — Table, kitchen, or household articles of stainless steel. General tariff: 2% + Section 301 List 3 tariff: 25%. Total: 27%.

HTS 7326.90.86.88 — Other articles of steel. Check with your customs broker for exact classification as classification can affect the rate.

Note: Section 301 tariffs were maintained into 2025 with some product-specific exclusions. Verify current status with a licensed US customs broker or CBP before importing.

European Union

EU Combined Nomenclature code 7323 93 10 (vacuum insulated containers) carries a 2.7% duty rate for goods originating from China under MFN (Most Favored Nation) status.

Most stainless drinkware falls in the 2–7% range. The EU doesn't currently apply anti-dumping duties specifically to stainless steel drinkware from China (unlike steel pipe products which have anti-dumping measures).

With the Brexit transition complete, UK and EU are now separate duty regimes.

UK, Australia, Canada, Japan

Global export and logistics

UK Global Tariff: 4% on most stainless steel drinkware (CN 7323).

Australia: Generally 0–5% under general tariff. Australia has a FTA with several Asian countries that could affect rates depending on rules of origin.

Canada: MFN tariff typically 3–6.5% for stainless steel kitchenware.

Japan: MFN tariff 0–3.9% for stainless containers. Japan has specific testing requirements (SGS JFSL) that apply to food contact materials.

Frequently asked questions

Vacuum flasks and other vacuum vessels classify under HS 9617.00; non-vacuum stainless drinkware usually falls under 7323.93 (stainless table/kitchen articles). The distinction matters because duty rates differ. We state the code we believe applies on the pro forma, but your customs broker has the final call in your country — confirm before you commit to a landed-cost model.

It depends on the valuation basis your country uses. CIF countries (most of the EU) assess duty on goods plus insurance plus freight; FOB countries (the US) assess on goods value alone. This is why the same order can land at different total cost depending on whether you buy FOB Ningbo or DDP. Ask us to quote both and compare the landed number, not the unit price.
