“Leak proof” is the least regulated word on a drinkware spec sheet. Three suppliers can use it for three different levels of performance — and the gap only shows up in your customer’s bag.
The short version: before you order tumblers in bulk, confirm six things — the steel grade (304), the double-wall vacuum construction and its tested insulation hours, the lid and gasket quality, the sizes and capacities, the decoration method, and the supplier's MOQ, certifications and sample policy. Get these right and a bulk order goes smoothly; skip them and you inherit leaks, weak insulation or a quiet grade swap.

The test that separates them. Ours is a 24-hour inverted leak test: filled, sealed, laid on its side and left upside down for a full day, then checked for seepage at the thread and around the gasket. We run it on the production line, not only on the pre-production sample — a gasket that seats correctly when a sample is hand-assembled can behave differently once assembly is running at speed.
You do not need a lab. Before you approve a sample, do this:
Ask the supplier one question: is your leak test inverted and timed, or a quick upright check? Both get called “leak tested”. They catch completely different failures, and only the first one predicts what happens in a rucksack.
What we would tell you honestly: a screw lid with a fully seated gasket is the only construction we would put in a bag with a laptop. Sliders and press-button flips are convenient one-handed, but they are splash or spill resistant — not leak proof — and the gasket in a flip mechanism is usually the first part to age, typically after 12–18 months of daily use.
Food-grade tumblers should be 304 stainless (18/8). Some suppliers quote 304 and ship cheaper 201, which corrodes more easily. Ask for the mill grade certificate with the order, and a sample. 316 is an upgrade for salty/acidic drinks; 201 is a no.
A real double-wall vacuum is what keeps drinks cold or hot. Don't accept "insulated" as a word — ask for the tested numbers (e.g. cold ~24h, hot ~12h) and confirm the vacuum is properly welded. A failed vacuum turns your tumbler into a single-wall cup.
Lids and silicone gaskets are the most common quality failure in bulk tumblers. Leak-test the sample (full, inverted, shaken), check the gasket seats cleanly, and confirm straws and slider lids are food-grade. A cheap lid sinks an otherwise good tumbler.
Match sizes to your market: 20 oz and 30 oz are the all-rounders, 40 oz handled tumblers are the current trend, 12 oz suits kids and coffee. Offering 2–3 sizes covers most demand without spreading your order thin.
Decide how your design goes on: laser for a permanent premium mark, powder-coat + screen/UV print for colour, or sublimation-ready blanks if you print yourself. Each has a different cost and minimum — confirm before you commit.
A real factory states a clear MOQ (ours is 500/design). "No minimum, fully custom" is a red flag.
FDA, LFGB, EU 1935/2004 and Prop 65 reports should be available on request — not promised "later".
Always approve a sample with your colour, logo and lid before bulk. 7–10 days is normal.
Owning the line means a spec change takes a day rather than a week of emails, and it means consistent quality and true cost. Ask to see the production line.
Splash resistant survives being knocked upright. Spill resistant survives a brief tip-over. Leak proof survives full inversion, sealed, for hours — a bag with a laptop in it. Suppliers use all three words loosely, so ask which test produced the claim rather than accepting the word.
Fill it completely (a half-full bottle hides a marginal seal), invert it over a paper towel for an hour, then check the towel and the outer thread — beading on the thread is a fail even without drips. Squeeze the body while inverted if it is plastic. Then repeat after 20 open-close cycles, because many failures only show once the gasket has been compressed.
